What the eff is it with Toronto developers releasing kooky and beautiful games for my beloved PS3 at great price points? First it was Jon Mak's Everyday Shooter, which set the originality-bar really high for PlayStation Network games, and now we have Critter Crunch from Capybara Games at the OMGMUSTBUY price of $6.99!
Capybara, incidentally, are my favourite animals EVAHR, even more so than monkeys. Would love it if Kris could confirm if there's an actual capybara office mascot, preferably named Trixie, that exists or not.
Critter Crunch is an actiony-puzzley game wherein your critter eats creatures that move down the screen, then spits them back up at bigger creatures for them to eat, as so on and so forth. Kris Piotrowski and Nathan Vella from Capy describe the game as being centered around the idea of the food chain. As such, you can (for massive pointage) VOMIT RAINBOW COLOURED MUSH INTO YOUR CHILD'S MOUTH. Perhaps it's best described in the video below.
In the early days of the PS3, downloadable games would max out at $9.99, with premium games like WipEout HD being released at a totally acceptable $19.99. Lately, PSN games have been released with higher and higher price points - Flock, Fat Princess and Smash Cars all released at $14.99, a full $5 above many people's impulse-buy price point, and a full $5 more than they're worth in my opinion. Capybara releasing Critter Crunch not only below the $14.99 price point, but below $9.99 (as displayed in this absolutely adorable linked video) is hopefully a sign of the times.
Critter Crunch is also available for iPhones and iPod Touches, but screw that; This game's beautiful Ghibli-ish animated visuals are best appreciated in high-def. Really, though, you should just get both. It should be available in the PSN store later today on October 8. If you want to see an extended interview with Nathan and Kris where they explain many things (including the rainbow-barf mechanic), visit the PlayStation blog right over here.
