Of Cakes and Raccoons: Levels and Looping

Internet: Oh hai! 2003 called to remind you that you left your programming skills here, would you like to come get them?
Me: Uh yes, I'll be right over.
Internet: Ok, but FYI, some the nubbly bits have gone stale.
Me: Dammit...

The last two AGI sessions have found me learning how to do basic level design. I'm finding that while years of media/advertising work has served me well in being mark-up efficient, thinking like a game designer is a wholly different beast. It took a while to get my head around the idea that "do this forever" isn't really a bad thing, because if your JS is doing something forever it just eats your browser. Anyways...

I've mostly been tooling around with platformers or scrollers for this. OMG, getting things to scroll around is nit-picky! Kudos to old school game designers. :) I think side-scrollers are still one my favourite kinds of game genres to play. Maybe its just nostalgia, but I inherently like the feeling of the objects, and the fact i don't always get lost while investigating something (you laugh but its true). Plus, just because its not 3D doesn't mean it has to be boring...

Case in point! N. N is a rather hard platformer, with a nice little editor anyone can use. My level came out to what I can only describe as the Doom Tree. One skinny tunnel + mines = splat. Basically all the things that drove me nuts about N levels.

And while making it was fun, the best part was sharing it and playing everyone else's levels while offering suggestions and smack talking. :) If you still have the flash build (it's free for all platforms!), you can download my level here. Y'know, maybe that's why I still like simple looking platformers and side-scrollers; they're not intimidating to try, and they're really easy to get sucked into.

scratch's workspace

Currently I'm messing about in Scratch to try making a scroller game. Scratch's interface is pretty neat in that you basically make loops visually by snapping bits and blocks together. My scroller isn't polished by any means, but its coming along just fine. :) More diary updates to come!
